Birth Trauma Recovery

  • Do you feel like your birth experience was traumatic for either you or your baby?

Immediately after the birth, life is often both chaotic and joyful, and it can be easy to minimise any difficult or frightening experiences and concentrate on building a bond with your little one, while hoping that over time the effects will gradually diminish. The events can also be played down by professionals whose role tends to focus on physical recovery.

You may even feel that what happened should not have had such an impact, but where trauma is concerned it is not purely about what happened, but how it is experienced, and that is key to understanding what kind of lasting impact it may have.

    What We Offer

At our specialist sessions we can help you understand your body's response to trauma and how a difficult birth experience can affect both the mother and the baby. We can help you to understand the legacy of trauma on your daily life and how you and your baby can begin to move on and recover from the experience. We also include a simple movement check for your baby (if you'd like us to) to assess how well their nervous system is functioning - which can then provide an opportunity to show you simple things that you can do to strengthen their system and prevent future problems.

Traumatic experiences are held in the nervous system and aren't typically resolved by traditional methods of counselling like talking therapies. In fact many people don't want to talk about their experiences although some do, but what is key is understanding the impact on your whole system and why that can sometimes make you feel a bit stuck with the trauma.

Due to the nature of these specialist sessions we will be keeping the group size to four participants with their babies.

Sessions are run by an HCPC registered occupational therapist with extensive experience and qualifications in working with trauma.
